The 3-day Human Behaviour in Disaster Prevention (HBDP) Course is designed for senior crew, officers and managers across all sectors of the maritime industry. Its purpose is to highlight and understand the ways we can reduce, through mindset and awareness, the risks of a disaster occurring.

Accidents and disasters most often have a human element amongst the multiple factors that often coincide to create a disaster in potentially hazardous situations. Some factors are beyond our control but our decisions are certainly controllable, and it is an understanding of how appropriate and timely decisions based on practical awareness and knowledge of human behaviour that can limit the risk.

The course addresses the main factors of human behaviour and how that behaviour may contribute to a chain of events leading to a disaster, how to prevent mis-communication and be aware of a wider picture. The course is particularly important for those crew and executives in high risk management situations, such as large passenger vessels, VLCCs, hazardous cargoes, oil and gas operations, and fuel / oil transfers.

This course will help you recognise the behaviour and actions that contribute to general hazards and resulting loss of value or life and how each person can reduce the risks through deliberate actions, understanding and awareness.
